As a Learning Mentor (Autism Specialist), you will deliver tailored, proactive support for autistic pupils. You will collaborate with the SENCO and Lead Teacher to enhance curriculum access, build independence, and create structured environments.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Pupil Support & Intervention

 

  • Address immediate needs: Respond quickly to sensory overload, anxiety, and communication barriers.
  • Adapt curriculum delivery: Use structured frameworks like TEACCH, social stories, and visual aids.
  • Support communication: Implement specialized systems including PECS and Makaton.
  • Run targeted programs: Design individual and small-group sessions for social skills and independence.
  • Foster emotional regulation: Build pupil resilience, wellbeing, and self-management skills over time.

 

Progress & Collaboration

 

  • Track outcomes: Monitor pupil progress against EHCP/IEP targets to reduce restrictive practices.
  • Engage stakeholders: Partner with families, school staff, and external specialists for holistic care.
  • Upskill staff: Lead training sessions to share best practices and autism-specific strategies.

 

Candidate Requirements

 

Essential Criteria

 

  • Proven track record: Extensive experience supporting autistic youth, preferably in specialist provisions.
  • Deep theoretical knowledge: Understanding of sensory processing, executive functioning, and theory of mind.
  • Relevant credentials: Autism-specific qualifications, such as National Autistic Society (NAS) modules or a PG Cert.
  • Autonomy: Ability to work independently, make firm professional judgements, and lead interventions.
  • Core skills: Expertise in communication, assessment, and evidence-based behaviour support.

 

Desirable Attributes

 

  • Leadership: Experience mentoring colleagues or facilitating group sessions.
  • Specialist tools: Certifications in Team Teach, Makaton, or PECS.
