About the Role

We are seeking a committed and compassionate Primary Teacher to join our specialist SEN school for pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). You will deliver an engaging, personalised curriculum that supports pupils’ academic progress, communication development, sensory regulation, and overall well-being. Our classes are small, with excellent support from experienced Teaching Assistants and a multidisciplinary team.

This is an extremely nurturing role, ideal for a Primary teacher with experience working with children with ASD/MLD.

About the School

This is an independent school for learners with a diagnosis of autism and a relevant EHCP to support their learning.  The school caters for learners from 8 years old to 16 years, and the college is a specialist provision for Post 16 pupils.  Both sites are within walking distance of each other and create a community feel, with mixed activities and events.  Set in the beautiful historic site of Rochester within a stone’s throw of the town centre, this is a unique and well-resourced provision.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality lessons across the primary curriculum, differentiated to meet a wide range of learning needs.
• Contribute to the creation and implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), using them to guide personalised learning targets.
• Use evidence-based approaches commonly used in UK autism provisions, such as TEACCH, Attention Autism, SCERTS, and Zones of Regulation.
• Provide structure and predictability through visual timetables, task boards, now/next supports, and consistent routines.
• Work closely with Teaching Assistants, the SENCO, therapists (e.g., SaLT, OT), and parents/carers to ensure a coordinated approach to each pupil’s development.
• Use inclusive communication strategies, such as PECS, Makaton, or AAC systems, where appropriate.
• Maintain accurate assessment records in line with school policy and contribute to annual reviews, reports, and statutory requirements.
• Support the promotion of positive behaviour using proactive, trauma-informed, and regulation-focused strategies.
• Engage in regular CPD and whole-school development initiatives, ensuring practice is compliant with UK safeguarding and SEND frameworks.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – recognised by the UK Teaching Regulation Agency.
• Experience teaching within a UK primary setting.
• Knowledge and understanding of the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and statutory responsibilities.
• Experience adapting teaching for pupils with autism and complex learning needs.
• Strong behaviour-support skills and a nurturing, child-centred approach.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable Experience

• Experience working in a UK special school, resourced provision, or specialist ASC unit.
• Familiarity with UK assessment approaches for SEND learners (e.g., Engagement Model, pre-key stage standards).
• Training in positive behaviour support, sensory integration, or communication systems.
