About the School & Role
We are partnering with an outstanding specialist school dedicated to providing a nurturing, vibrant, and highly tailored education for children aged 4–19.
The school supports learners with a wide spectrum of Profound, Severe, and Complex Needs (PSCN), including Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), severe developmental delays, complex medical conditions, physical disabilities, and sensory impairments.
As a specialist SEND Teaching Assistant, you will be the vital link that helps these incredible children access the world around them. This is not a standard classroom role. You will be working in a highly rewarding environment where success is measured in small, beautiful milestones—whether that is a child making eye contact, mastering a switch toy, or communicating a preference for the first time.
Key Responsibilities
- Tailored Learning Support: Deliver early years and primary sensory-based curriculums on a 1:1 and small group basis, adapting activities to meet each child’s cognitive age.
- Personal Care & Physical Support: Assist with all aspects of personal care, including toileting, changing, feeding, and hydrotherapy sessions.
- Mobility & Postural Care: Safely use specialised equipment such as hoists, standing frames, and specialised seating to support pupils’ physical dignity and comfort (training provided).
- Sensory & Communication Delivery: Utilise alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) tools, including Makaton, PECS, Objects of Reference, and eye-gaze technology to give non-verbal children a voice.
- Therapy Integration: Work alongside speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists to seamlessly integrate therapeutic goals into the daily school routine.
- Medical Awareness: Maintain a high level of vigilance regarding pupils’ healthcare needs, collaborating closely with the school nursing team.
What We Are Looking For
- Experience: Proven experience working with primary-aged children (EYFS/KS1/KS2) with severe or profound learning difficulties, complex medical needs, or physical disabilities.
- Attributes: Exceptional patience, resilience, warmth, and a playful, nurturing nature suited to primary-aged children.
- Skills: Knowledge of sensory stories, messy play, and intensive interaction techniques is highly advantageous.
- Qualifications/Training: Prior training in Moving and Handling, Paediatric First Aid, Team-Teach, or communication aids (Makaton/PECS) is highly desirable, though a willingness to learn is essential.
- Compliance: A valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or readiness to undergo a new check).
What We Offer
- Competitive daily rates, paid weekly via PAYE or a permanent contract.
- Continuous professional development (CPD), including certified courses in Safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, and specialized communication strategies.
- A supportive, dedicated consultant who specializes exclusively in primary SEND education.
- Genuine opportunities for professional growth and permanent school contracts.
