Job Description

SEMH Primary Teacher – Transform Lives in Maidstone

Position: SEMH Primary Teacher
Location: Maidstone, Kent
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: MPS/UPS + SEN Allowance
Start Date: January 2026 (or earlier if available)

Are you a passionate primary teacher ready to make a meaningful impact?

We are looking for an exceptional and emotionally intelligent SEMH Primary Teacher to join our nurturing and specialist primary provision in Maidstone. This is not just a teaching job — it’s an opportunity to change lives.

Our school supports children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, who may have experienced trauma, disrupted education, or other significant barriers to learning. As part of our highly skilled team, you will help create a safe, structured, and inspiring learning environment where every child is given the tools to succeed — academically, socially, and emotionally.

Whether you're an experienced SEMH practitioner or a passionate mainstream teacher ready for a new challenge, we want to hear from you.

About the Pupils:

The pupils are at the heart of everything the school does. They are curious, creative, and full of potential — they just need the right environment to thrive. Many of the children have experienced difficulties in previous settings and require additional support to build trust, resilience, and a positive sense of self.

You’ll be teaching small class groups (usually 6–8 pupils) with a high adult-to-pupil ratio, supported by skilled and empathetic teaching assistants who share your commitment to inclusion.

About the School:

This is a specialist provision in Maidstone, committed to trauma-informed practice and delivering a fully inclusive curriculum that meets the diverse needs of our pupils. We value relationships, structure, and consistency and believe in restorative approaches to behaviour.

Our setting benefits from:

  • Spacious, well-resourced classrooms
  • On-site therapeutic and pastoral support (including speech and language therapists, ELSAs, and behaviour mentors)
  • A leadership team that truly values the wellbeing and development of its staff
  • A focus on professional growth and career development — including training in emotion coaching, restorative practice, and therapeutic teaching approaches

The Role:

As an SEMH Primary Teacher, you will:

  • Deliver a tailored primary curriculum that is engaging, nurturing, and flexible to meet individual pupil needs
  • Foster a positive classroom culture built on safety, trust, and mutual respect
  • Work closely with parents, carers, therapists, and support staff to create consistent, child-centred strategies
  • Promote emotional literacy, self-regulation, and social skills as core elements of the school day
  • Be part of a collaborative team that learns from and supports one another every step of the way

What We’re Looking For:

  • A qualified teacher (QTS/QTLS) with primary teaching experience (KS1/KS2)
  • An understanding of the challenges faced by children with SEMH needs and a trauma-informed mindset
  • A patient, empathetic, and reflective approach to behaviour and learning
  • The ability to differentiate creatively and engage pupils with diverse needs and abilities
  • A team player with a strong sense of resilience and a great sense of humour

Experience working in an SEMH or specialist setting is desirable, but not essential — we provide comprehensive induction and ongoing CPD to support your transition if you're new to this field.

In Return, We Offer:

  • Smaller class sizes and high staffing ratios
  • A supportive, inclusive, and forward-thinking school culture
  • Access to ongoing CPD, coaching, and leadership opportunities
  • The opportunity to genuinely transform the life chances of children who need it most
  • A strong focus on staff wellbeing, including access to counselling, supervision, and flexible support systems
  • Opportunities to grow with us as we expand and evolve
