Key Stage Secondary
Job Description
The school is a vibrant and inclusive secondary provision committed to providing every young person with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. The staff pride themselves on fostering a nurturing and supportive environment where social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs are met with understanding, consistency, and care.
We are now seeking a dedicated SEMH Learning Assistant to join our passionate team and make a lasting difference in the lives of our students.
As an SEMH Learning Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting students with additional emotional or behavioural needs to engage positively in school life. Working closely with our SENDCo, pastoral team, and teaching staff, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs across a range of subjects.
Assist in developing personalised strategies and interventions to help pupils regulate emotions and behaviour.
Support pupils in managing transitions, building resilience, and improving self-esteem.
Work collaboratively with class teachers to adapt learning materials and ensure lessons are accessible.
Promote positive relationships and model appropriate social and emotional skills.
Help maintain a calm, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.
Liaise with external agencies and parents where appropriate to support individual pupils’ progress and wellbeing.
We’re looking for someone who is caring, patient, and resilient — a natural relationship builder who can remain calm under pressure and who truly believes that every child can succeed.
Essential qualities:
Experience working with young people with SEMH or additional needs (in a school or youth setting).
Understanding of the challenges faced by pupils with emotional or behavioural difficulties.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
A positive, restorative approach to behaviour management.
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable (but not essential):
Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching & Learning, or equivalent).
Experience within a secondary school environment.
Knowledge of trauma-informed or attachment-aware practice.
A supportive, forward-thinking team passionate about inclusive education.
Ongoing professional development, including SEMH and safeguarding training.
Opportunities to progress within the school or wider trust.
A nurturing and values-driven environment where your contribution is truly valued.
