Are you a passionate and resilient educator who specialises in unlocking the potential of neurodivergent children? Kent Teaching Solutions is proud to recruit on behalf of an outstanding, forward-thinking Independent SEND School looking for a dedicated KS2 SEND Class Teacher.
This role is focused on leading a small, specialised classroom of Key Stage 2 pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and complex learning needs, including severe communication difficulties and sensory processing differences. This is initially a long-term position through the agency, with a strong view to a permanent contract for the right candidate.
The Role
In this position, you will design highly tailored learning environments rather than standard lessons. Leading a small class with an exceptional ratio of specialised learning support assistants, you will build a predictable, low-arousal space where pupils can safely regulate, communicate, and succeed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Personalised Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver a highly differentiated, multi-sensory curriculum aligned with individual Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) that balances functional life skills with academic progression.
- Communication Support: Utilise alternative and augmentative communication methods, including PECS, Makaton, and AAC devices, to engage non-verbal and pre-verbal learners.
- Positive Behaviour Management: Implement proactive emotional regulation strategies and positive behaviour frameworks (such as the Zones of Regulation).
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Liaise closely with onsite Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and families to ensure holistic care.
- Classroom Leadership: Direct and mentor a team of dedicated Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) to deliver consistent, high-impact interventions.
About You
We are looking for an empathetic teacher who celebrates the micro-steps of progress as major achievements. You must bring a calm, patient presence alongside a deep practical understanding of severe autism.
Essential Criteria:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised UK teaching qualification.
- Proven experience teaching children with Autism (ASD) and severe, complex learning needs.
- A strong understanding of the EHCP framework and tracking non-linear progress.
- Expertise in setting up visual structures and independent workstations (such as the TEACCH approach).
- An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
Desirable Criteria:
- Specific training in specialist interventions (e.g., Team Teach / Positive Handling, Attention Autism, or PECS).
