Job Title: SEND Outreach Tutor
Location: Community-based (Face-to-face sessions in learners’ homes, local libraries, community hubs, or schools)
Position Type: Part Time
Job Purpose
The SEND Outreach Tutor delivers high-quality, personalised 1:1 academic and therapeutic education to children and young people who are unable to access traditional classroom settings. This includes learners with complex needs such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties, as well as those experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).
The primary focus is to rebuild learning confidence, close academic gaps, and actively support the targets outlined in the student’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Key Responsibilities
1. Instructional Delivery & Adaptability
- Personalised 1:1 Tuition: Plan and deliver engaging, tailored lessons in core subjects—principally English and Maths—stretching from early functional skills up to GCSE level where appropriate.
- Curriculum Adaptation: Differentiate teaching styles, pacing, and learning materials to match the unique sensory, emotional, and cognitive profiles of each learner.
- EHCP Alignment: Design lesson objectives that directly target the individual goals and strategies specified in the student’s EHCP.
2. Student Engagement & Well-being
- Relationship Building: Establish trusting, low-demand, and secure relationships with students who may have previously disengaged from or felt traumatised by mainstream school environments.
- Confidence & Mentoring: Use positive reinforcement and growth mindset approaches to build self-esteem and ease school-related anxiety.
- Therapeutic Integration: Weave life skills, emotional regulation strategies, and social mentorship into academic routines.
3. Assessment, Tracking & Collaboration
- Progress Monitoring: Assess initial baselines, identify core learning gaps, and keep meticulous records of academic milestones and behavioural breakthroughs.
- Multidisciplinary Liaison: Work collaboratively with parents, carers, Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs), local authority caseworkers, and external support services.
- Reporting: Prepare clear feedback and structured session reports to inform annual EHCP reviews and transition strategies.
4. Safeguarding & Logistics
- Safeguarding: Maintain a strict adherence to local child protection policies and safeguard the physical and emotional welfare of vulnerable children at all times.
- Dynamic Risk Management: Assess and manage safety profiles across varied environments (home, community spaces, or outdoor settings).
