We recruiting for a specialist SEMH alternative provision supporting young people at Key Stages 3 and 4 who have experienced barriers to mainstream education. The learners are often bright, creative, and capable, but require a high-support, trauma-informed environment to re-engage with learning and develop the skills they need for adulthood.
The provision prides itself on small class sizes, strong pastoral support, and a curriculum that balances academic rigour with emotional wellbeing and personal development.
The Role
We are seeking a passionate and resilient English Teacher to deliver engaging, meaningful English lessons to KS3 and KS4 pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
You will play a key role in helping students:
- Rebuild confidence as learners
- Develop literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills
- Achieve accredited outcomes (e.g. GCSE, Functional Skills or Entry Level qualifications)
- Re-establish positive relationships with education
This role is ideal for a teacher who believes that relationships come before results, but still holds high expectations for progress and achievement.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons tailored to individual needs and abilities
- Adapt the curriculum creatively to engage learners who may be reluctant or anxious about education
- Teach across KS3 and KS4, including exam preparation where appropriate
- Use restorative, trauma-informed approaches to behaviour and classroom management
- Monitor, assess and track pupil progress, setting clear and achievable targets
- Contribute to EHCP reviews, progress reports and multi-agency meetings
- Work closely with pastoral staff, SEND professionals, and families/carers
- Create a calm, consistent and supportive learning environment
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who:
- Holds QTS/QTLS (or is an experienced unqualified teacher with relevant AP/SEMH experience)
- Has experience teaching English at KS3 and/or KS4
- Has worked with pupils with SEMH, SEND, or in alternative provision (desirable but not essential)
- Demonstrates strong behaviour management rooted in empathy and consistency
- Is flexible, reflective and emotionally resilient
- Can build positive, trusting relationships with challenging and vulnerable young people
- Believes in inclusion, second chances, and the transformative power of education
What We Offer
- Small class sizes with high levels of support
- A strong pastoral and therapeutic framework
- Ongoing CPD in SEMH, trauma-informed practice and SEND
- A collaborative and supportive staff team
- The opportunity to make a genuine, lasting difference to young people’s lives
- Competitive salary and benefits package
